Chapter 5

"One day you will ask me which is more important? My life or yours? I will say mine and you will walk away not knowing that you are my life".

_William Morris.

"I have an offer for you".

"Yes. Please continue, I'm all ears". he said with a stern face but his eyes were glinting with hidden mirth as he leaned on his huge chair.

I rolled my shoulders back while gazing at him, as I reminiscised my fool-proof plan to get out of this trouble.

The PLEXUS & Co were trying hard to get a patent right on the new medical equipment they have designed. But the government authorities were denying, to grant them the rights over the newly developed device.

So I and Lena came up with an idea- I will help him to access the patent rights over the device through my connections with the officials and as a thanking gesture he will reject the proposal.

It's too simple.

"I can help you to get the patent rights over the newly developed prosthetic- Stent, inturn you should reject the marriage proposal", I said examining his calculative gaze.

His action surprised me. As I expected anything but that reaction from him.

He bursted out laughing, throwing his head back. I knitted my brows in confusion.

Is he going insane with happiness?

No that couldn't be.

He finally straightened his posture adjusting his coat lapels as he stepped away from his chair.

"I see", he said as his lips curled up in a mocking smile.

"That investigator of yours as done his job well, but you Ms. Deshmukh, clearly underestimated me", he said shaking his head disappointedly.

My cheeks heated up in embarrasment at that. Ofcourse the great Remington will know if anyone is trying to dig-up his company's private information.

But, wait!. What did he mean by I clearly underestimated him?

Whatever. I have to concentrate on my mission right now.

With that in my mind I raised my chin up in determination.

"I don't care about anything else

Mr. Remington. Are you accepting my offer, right now?", I questioned raising my brow at him challengingly.

"You still didn't get me, do you?", he questioned as a scornful smile grazed his sinful lips.

"What do you mean?", I asked defensively at his arrogance.

He let out a light chuckle rounding his table as he stood right infront of me leaning on his table

"You fell in your own trap, darling. The patent rights were approved a month before", he smirked at me.

"What?", I cocked my head towards him, unable to wrap my head around the unexpected turn of events. What does he mean by that?

Did he.. by chance.....? No way in hell!!

My eyes widened and my tongue coiled as the realization hit me like a truck of bricks.

"D...did you plan this meeting?", I finally asked staring at him in utter disbelief.

"Psst...psst......Now you got me", he clicked his tongue showing mock sympathy at my bewildered form.

I fisted my hands tightly on the handrest as my blood boiled in my veins at the audacity of this man.

"How dare you?", I sneered glaring fiercely at him.

A thunderous look crossed his features at my raised tone. As he gaze turned merciless.

"If I were you, I would watch that tone of yours", his throaty voice reached me.

A shiver ran down my spine at his stern tone. I understood one thing about this man now.

He is not the one to be messed with. I have to be sharp-witted while dealing with Mr. Nicholas Remington.

I exhaled a breath calming my head as I unclenched my fists placing them on the table as I leaned forward.

"Look Mr. Remington, I consider you smart enough to get my point", I said staring at his blank face.

"I'm not suitable for your world", I said

He smirked at that crossing his hands, satisified by my reply.

Wait! does he think I'm lowering my esteem here?

"Let me make this clear for you", I hissed seeing his content face.

"You are not perfect for me. You don't fit in my world", I spat staring at his grey hues.

A knock interrupted us.

"Come in", he commanded as the same meek- woman came inside nervously handing him a file.

"Everything is ready as you requested, Sir", she mumbled lowly.

"You may go now", he said as his arrogant gaze turned towards me.

"Take a look at this before you speak your next words", he advised passing me the same file.

What is he planning now?

Arrogant-jerk.

I snatched the file from him, staring at his unwavering gaze, which was not helping me at the moment.

Sweat-beads coated my forehead as my body went cold as I turned the pages frantically.

No, this can't be true.

"What kind of sick game is this?", I stood up from my seat, annoyed at the

crazy man before me.

"I'm not interested in playing games Miss. Deshmukh", he grunted.

"Unlike yours, my sources are perfectly

errorless", he boasted.

"I don't believe this. For heaven's-sake, my team has followed every legal process in buying the land where we have constructed the hospital", I continued.

"Then how come these papers are indicating that the property belongs to PLEXUS & Co?", I snapped at him.

"These papers are original. You better confirm the matter before taking any decisions", he emphasized as he exhaled a breath.

"You have 24 hours before I submit these papers to court. I hope you don't want the legal-battle to tarnish your hard-built hospital's reputation".

He smirked as his eyes glimmered knowing he had an upper-hand.

That's Low-blow you asshole.

"Whatever may be the case, I will handle it. Don't you dare think for a moment that I will consider marrying you".

I warned as I threw an acid glare at him before grabbing my hand-bag and marching towards the glass door.

I gasped feeling a warm hand slipped past my waist as I got pulled against a hard chest before I took few steps.

I could feel the heavy rise and fall of his chest at the back of my body as his hand slipped past my waist now resting on my stomach.

My body shuddered at the sensation, as blood from all parts of my body rushed

to the site where he was holding me back, at the same speed a wild river gushes from a mountain top.

"You clearly need to be taught some manners, sweetheart", he breathed huskily near my earlobe, causing an ill-sensation to creep up my nerves.

Sweetheart

My breathing fastened, hearing the same word, which has become the source of my nightmares.

No no no......it's just a trick of my mind.

I tried to placate the dread raising inside me. No. There's no way I'm remembering that vulnerable truth again.

I turned facing him , still in his deadly hold.

A big mistake.

My heart again skipped a breath seeing the flames flickering in his stormy eyes at an untamed intensity clearly affected by the nearness of our faces.

A sudden nauseating feeling erupted in my stomach, as I slight feeling of dizziness hit me.

I jerked back from his hold at a lightening speed, as I stumbled on my steps.

"Are you Ok", he extended his arms as a look of concern appeared in his stormy eyes.

"Don't touch me", I jolted back from his touch calming the tremors erupted from his nearness.

He furrowed his brows clearly taken aback from my act. As his deep eyes tried to read my startled eyes.

"Look Mr. Remington, marriage is not a logic that can be adjusted nor a physics that can be understood as per your wish".

A gentle-look crossed his stern eyes.

"It's definitely not a game to play. Marriage requires commitment, faith, loyalty. I cannot offer you any of those things", I exhaled.

An unknown look crossed his eyes, as the heavy silence lingered in the air.

I finally exhaled and turned back taking his silence as a cue to exit before a stiff voice halted my steps.

"I can't prolong our union any more.

You have 24 hours to decide".
